Amazing Slow Downer for Windows

We remember trying to play along with our favorite songs when we were learning to play bass guitar and struggling, because the songs moved faster than our neophyte fingers could. We wish we'd had Amazing Slow Downer for Windows then. This innovative tool allows users to change the speed of audio playback using a simple slider, and it's a great tool for anyone trying to learn to play along with their favorite songs. The program's interface is plain, but it's well organized and intuitive. Amazing Slow Downer's controls are represented by a series of sliders and drop-down menus. We liked that the Amazing Slow Downer could handledigital audio files and CDs; we tried it with both and it worked fine. The application has multiple useful features, including the option to set start and end points for looping; this allows users to listen to the most challenging part of a song over and over again until they master it. The speed slider has quite a large range, and allows users to increase speed above normal if desired. The program also has an equalizer and a karaoke option that reduces (but does not entirely eliminate) the vocal track. The program's built-in Help file is well written. Overall, we found Amazing Slow Downer for Windows to be quite fun and easy to use, and we think it's a great choice for anyone who's learning an instrument. Amazing Slow Downer for Windows is free to try, but the trial version will only play the first two tracks of a CD and the first quarter of an audio file. The program installs politely but leaves a folder behind upon removal. We recommend this program to all users.

EarMaster Pro

EarMaster Pro provides users with an easy-to-follow tutorial into the world of music. Utilizing a beautiful-looking and intuitive format, many users will find the mysteries of music unraveled after training with this tool. This program jumps out immediately and says it's something special, thanks to its design. Tasteful uses of colors, cartoons, and diagrams all make this look and feel like a very professional program. Learning and testing were intuitive and should not require much of a learning curve for people unaccustomed to music. Fortunately, there is an equally excellent Help file for any questions that arise. Users are given a choice between learning on a guitar or a piano, both of which are represented by excellent images on the screen. After that, users simply select one of the many tutorials along the top of the screen, listen to examples, and then try to match them on their instrument. EarMaster features tutorials that teach rhythms, scales, and notes, and each was simple to learn and fun to operate. The program provides some interesting special features as well. Users are free to plug in a MIDI keyboard for a more realistic tutorial and can even use a microphone for voice training. Another interesting feature were the statistics kept based on the amount of correct and incorrect answers. The 21-day trial period should be enough time to get acquainted with the program. With a professional layout and fun tutorials, this program was a pleasure to use and will be a benefit for anyone looking to learn music.
Synthesia

Back in our childhood, learning to play the piano meant sitting next to someone on a bench and plunking out a two-note song called "To the Zoo." We might have stuck with our piano instruction if we'd been doing it with Synthesia. This impressive program is part game and part learning tool, and we think it's a great choice for anyone looking to get started playing the piano or improve his skills. The program has an attractive, professional-looking interface. You can play using keyboard keys, which obviously doesn't do a great job of mimicking a real piano keyboard, or plug in a USB keyboard for a more realistic experience. The program comes with a long list of songs that are arranged alphabetically and ranked by difficulty. Upon selecting a song, you can choose to play only the right or left hand, play both hands, or simply watch Synthesia play it and follow along. The practice interface reminded us very much of Guitar Hero, with upcoming notes sliding down the screen toward the appropriate key. The free version of the program does have some limitations; you can practice song rhythms or score yourself playing a song, but both sheet music access and melody practice require the purchase of a Learning Pack. We feel like this might be a worthwhile purchase, however, and we highly recommend that people who are interested in learning to play the piano give Synthesia a try and then decide whether you want to shell out for the Learning Pack. We have a feeling that many people will. Synthesia installs and uninstalls without issues.
