Vocabulary .NET

Vocabulary .NET is a free tool designed to help users learn new words and new languages. It incorporates Google Dictionary and TTS, and it comes with an English dictionary, though you can import dictionary files as well as create, edit, and export your own custom dictionaries. While Vocabulary .NET's basic version is free, you must obtain a commercial license to use all its features, including bilingual translation. Desktop Renamer

True to its name, this ultrasimple executable guides you in renaming four common desktop icons, although the functionality is already available for all but one. Desktop Renamer has a straightforward interface with boxes for you to insert new names for the Recycle Bin, My Computer, My Documents, and My Network Places icons. Though the name changes indeed took effect during testing, we could just as quickly have selected Rename from the right-click menus of each folder except Recycle Bin. It can restore the original names of renamed folders, which we appreciate. Although this freeware is easy to use, we can't recommend you place it high on your must-have list because most of the functionality already exists within Windows.

Palm Pad

This onscreen keyboard assists in effortless typing and browsing, but doesn't allow modifications and takes some getting used to. Palm Pad's unique structure and keyboard buttons are cool. We're quite awed at how we can type and browse the Internet by simply hovering the mouse over the simulated keys the application places onscreen. In our tests, Palm Pad quickly responded as the pointer rested on the key of choice. Still, we aren't too pleased that the keyboard layout, reaction time for selecting keys, and size and onscreen positioning of the keyboard can't be configured. Though Palm Pad's keys are contiguous, it's not the standard keyboard layout. The unique design definitely requires some acclimation, certainly not a good thing considering its stingy 10-use trial restriction. Despite the negatives, those suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome or just about anyone who can't or doesn't want to deal with a keyboard may find Palm Pad beneficial.

This basic application for learning Spanish verbs beats flash cards, but would benefit from spoken-language features. Conjuga opens to a simple, attractive application window. The three main buttons are Recite, Learning Profile, and Dictionary. Recite starts the quiz, Learning Profile tracks your progress, and Dictionary provides a brief definition of each verb. To begin a quiz, you select a verb class (for example, "Regular, -ar") from a lengthy folder tree, then hit Recite. For each question, Conjuga supplies the infinitive, person, and tense. You type in the correct verb form, using a convenient drop-down list to enter special characters. Once you've answered correctly three times, that verb form is finished. You can create your own lessons. The 10-verb limitation didn't bother us as much as the lack of audio did. What help there is appears at the bottom of the window. If you need intensive work on Spanish verbs, Conjuga will do.
