Internet Cell Boost

Most Internet users probably feel resigned to the speed of their connection, whatever it may be; there's no obvious way to improve it short of giving even more money to your ISP or getting new hardware. Internet Cell Boost questions that assumption by promising to increase Internet speeds by optimizing your network configurations. Although we can't swear that it will work for everyone, it did indeed show a definite improvement for us. Before we tried Internet Cell Boost we ran a couple of online speed tests to get a baseline for our download and upload speeds. We launched the program and were greeted with a menu with items for Internet Settings, Advanced Settings, Local Area Network, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Everything Automatically. In the free version, however, only the Internet Settings feature works. Clicking on this brings up a screen on which users can select the type of connection they have, with numerous options for DSL or cable, wireless connections, dial-up, satellite, and closed networks. If you're not sure what kind of connection you have, you'll have to seek outside assistance to figure it out, as the program doesn't come with a Help file or any other documentation. We selected our connection type and clicked the Apply Optimization Settings button. The program asked us if we were sure, we confirmed, and then we were informed that we'd have to restart our computer for the changes to take effect. We did, and then ran our speed tests again. Both of them revealed that our download speed had increased by about 2MB per second, while our upload speed remained about the same. We found Internet Cell Boost to be an incredibly simple way to increase our download speed by a significant amount. We can't say exactly why it works, but it definitely does. Internet Cell Boost installs and uninstalls without issues.
Speed Reading III

Speed-reading programs are older than computer programs, but they're a natural when teamed up as software. Speed Reading III is a simple, free tool that tests your reading speed but not your comprehension. It's designed to help you increase your reading speed and concentration, which can boost comprehension. The basic idea isn't to try to read every word as fast as you can but to focus on a midpoint and see how well you understand the message. Speed Reading III opens with a plain and simple interface containing a text message that describes the basics of reading speed and how the application helps you gauge and improve your speed. It also offers basic instructions for using the program, including selecting your own text files as source material. The test view has a window on the left and speed controls on the right: radio buttons for selecting Very Slow to Fast as well as a slider for selecting between 200 and 400 words per minute. You can adjust the speed while reading, too. We clicked Start, and the program began displaying short snippets of text in an article, moving from column to column and down the rows. The idea is to increase the speed until you've found a setting that you're comfortable with. As you practice, you can keep increasing the speed as your ability to process the text increases. That's all Speed Reading III does: It doesn't grade or test you on what you just read; it just helps you determine how fast you read and helps you develop better reading skills. We like the ability to use your own text, which helps you understand how fast you read the things you actually read, not a prepared text. As we noted, Speed Reading III doesn't test your reading comprehension, which is a much different thing from reading speed and depends on the material as well as the reader. Whether or not you understand what you read isn't this tool's job; it just helps you understand how fast you read and how you can read faster.
NovaBench

How fast is your computer? Where are the performance bottlenecks? And how does it compare to other users' systems? NovaBench can answer those questions and more. This free benchmarking utility tests your CPU, RAM, graphics, disk speed, and other system parameters, creating a detailed report of its findings that you can upload to the NovaBench site with an optional free account. NovaBench is so easy to use that anyone can benchmark their system with it, but the information it gathers is useful even to pros. NovaBench has an extremely simple interface with a field displaying system info and one button, Start Benchmark Tests. We pressed it. A pop-up advised us to close Word, Chrome, and any other programs we might have running. We did, and the test proceeded with a series of pop-ups showing green progress bars. NovaBench started with our CPU, testing floating point operations, integer operations, and MD5 hash generation, and moving on to RAM, 3D graphics, hard drive read and write, and other tests. The graphics test opened a video window on our desktop. When the testing finished, NovaBench displayed the results in a tab. It displayed the test date and time, our OS, CPU, and GPU information, and test results with scores. Clicking Compare These Results Online opened a Web page displaying our test data with the ability to create a free account for posting and sharing our results in the user community. We could save our results locally, of course. Rerunning the test opened each new set of unsaved results in a new tab, or we could open saved results for comparison. The Tests menu let us run individual tests, run the system tests without the graphics test, and other options, including a link to an Internet bandwidth speed tool and a basic but effective system information tree view. NovaBench's tests complete quickly. Its tests are the same for every system since it's a benchmarking tool that collects data that can be compared to other users' systems. It's not a stress and stability tester like Prime95 or OCCT, and it can't hurt your system since you can't misuse it. You can run it as many times as you like.
